Baby PlayingSeeing a whales breech is a once in a lifetime experience and capturing one in camera is even more special.Working on a whale watching boat in the summer time allows me to see whales a lot more than most people, but it is still unusual to capture this special momment. There is no training that can prepare you for one, and if it does happen while you are out, you still have to be looking in the right direction, with your camera ready and remind yourself you want to photograph it.Most of the time, when a breechdoes happen; I stand stunned alongside the passengers, mouth opened laughing at how I missed the shot, but saw the breech!

Kayaker in front of Mendenhall Glacier
Kayaker in front of Mendenhall GlacierThe glaciers in Alaska are HUGE and to give them a proper scale you need someone or something in the photograph to give them the glory that they deserve. Here I lucked out with a kayaker in front of the Mendenhall glacier. These glaciers are also dynamic and changing. When I first moved to Juneau 3 years ago, this waterfall was just a trickle. Now it is several stories high and increasing the melt ratio for this part of the glacier. It is believed by glaciologists, that once the Mendenhall Glacier recedes out of the Mendenhall Lake, the rate of recession will slow down, but only time will tell.

Fireweed and The Mendenhall Glacier
Fireweed and The Mendenhall GlacierFrom the road you can see the Mendenhall Glacier and the Mendenhall Towers in the background.Throughout the year you can sit here and watch the field change. The snow will melt, the grass will begin to grow, the fireweed will take over and tower over you.As the flower grows it will give you a good idea of how long summer will last. This pink flower will start to bloom at the bottom slowly making its way to the top. When the flower dies, it puts out its seed, which is like cotton and the saying goes “When the fireweed turns to cotton, summer is soon forgotten.”Then you know that winter is just around the corner.

An Old Building
An Old BuildingWhile sick one night in Feburary, my friend Libby convinced me it was a good idea to go out and photograph the stars.Well, she was right because you do not get to see the sky very often in a rainforest. This building is a reminder of Juneau's past.It was once a booming gold mining town and on Douglas Island one of the most productive gold mines lived up until the 1927.One of the gold mine's main shafts collapsed in 1916 and a few years later In the 1920's a fire swept through the town of Douglas ending the mining legacy. This building was the pump house, which pumped sea water into the mine and also the fire suppression system of the town.During one winter, the town caught fire and the combination of strong winds, low tide, and frozen pipes, set the town ablaze.Few buildings remain and this pump house is one of the few that still stand.

People standing around the fire in front of cabin
People standing around the fire in front of cabinWhile on a 10 day, 40 mi. sea kayaking trip, my group discovered this forest service cabin on Chichagof Island. It was a nice change of pace and a luxury, from our usual kayak all day, set up camp, tear down camp, and repeat.Behind this cabin is also a road that leads to the Neka hot springs which is about 9 mi. away.It was a good resting spot in the middle of our trip.
Hiking through deglaciated terrain
Hiking through deglaciated terrainAfter a long hike to the Kaskawulsh Glacier we had to turn around. We had not gotten to the location we wanted to, we had surrvived trecherous rock scrambles, bush whacked through soap berry fields, and now it all became worthwhile when the sun began to set and the photographs were taken. Here Kyle leads the way back to our camp site roughly 5 miles away.Snow covered Mt. Maxwell is in the background extending from the St. Elias mountain range.

Brown Bear on Chichagof Island
Brown Bear on Chichagof IslandBrown bears are amazing animals and this was the first brown bear that I was able to photograph. The best time to see bears on the shore is early in the spring and summer when they are feeding on the sea grass. If you are in a kayak, it is possible to sneak in with stealth and take a closer look. While bears have an incredible sense of smell and hearing, they have horrible sight. This photograph is special to me because the day before, I was at a cabin on Chichagof Island that contained a cabin logbook. It read from a previous entry "Tracked 3 ursus americanus (brown bears) and took one."Well, here I tracked one and shot one, but let it live another day.
